Harmonized Sales Tax in Canada

HST is a new sales tax coming to Ontario in July 2010. HST will merge the provincial sales tax with the goods and services tax into a single Harmonized Sales Tax of 13%.

HST is not new to Canada. In 1997 HST was introduced to our country with its implementation in three Atlantic Provinces: Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

Ontario HST was first announced in March 2009 and on July 1st 2010 PSTGST will unite and Ontario will have a new harmonized sales tax.

HST Debate

Since it was originally proposed, HST in Ontario has been the subject of much debate. Most of the HST argument takes place between the Ontario government and the public. The government claims that HST will eventually lower the price of many goods & services in Canada, while many Ontario citizens see the new tax as cash grab.
