The Final Ontario HST Rebate Cheque is Coming Soon

It’s June, which means the final Ontario Sales Tax Transition Benefit is almost here. The HST cheque, also known as the HST rebate, will be sent by mail to qualifying Ontario residents sometime this month. HST Ontario will provide an update once a specific date is available.

How much is your HST rebate cheque?

  • Up to $1000 total for families (over three cheques, expect about 1/3 of this amount)
  • Up to $300 total for individuals (over three instalments, expect about 1/3 of this amount)

In order to qualify for the final HST benefit cheque you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older (or have partner / spouse, or live with a dependent child on May 31st 2011)
  • Be an Ontario resident on May 31st 2011
  • Must have been a resident of Canada on December 31st 2010
  • File a 2010 income tax return (by April 30th, 2012)

Harmonized sales tax was implemented in Ontario & British Columbia on July 1 2010. It replaces both the GST & PST taxes and has been the centre of much debate. While HST is new to many goods and services, there are still a number of items and services exempt from HST.

Here is a detailed guide to HST changes in Ontario. If you’re looking for more information on how to get your HST cheque or when your HST cheque is coming, please visit the official Ontario Ministry of Revenue website.

UPDATE: HST cheques have been sent. Ontario residents that qualify for the 3rd (and final HST cheque) should have received their cheque or direct deposit by now. Reminder: do not contact HST Ontario regarding missing HST cheques or damaged HST rebates.
