Provincial Sales Tax
March 14, 2010  |  PST

PST or provincial sales tax is a sales tax that is active in almost all Canadian provinces. The only provinces in Canada that do not have PST are Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland have already replaced their PST with a harmonized sales tax. A similar HST is coming to Ontario and British Columbia in July 2010.

Each province has their own PST rate ranging from 5% in Saskatchewan to 10% PEI. In many cases there are province specific PST exemptions.

The current PST rate in Ontario is 8%. PST is commonly taxed along side GST in Ontario which results in a total sales tax of 13%. When HST launches in Ontario and BC many items will see no change to the amount of sales tax charged.

There are many purchases in Ontario that are currently exempt from PST. When the Ontario HST begins many PST exempt goods and services will see a tax increase.
